We are the Architects for £15M Whitworth Art Gallery extension project which opened to the public in 2015.The project is currently shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize. Powell Masonry were the sub-contractors employed to lay significant areas of internal stonework and external paving. They procured and installed the bespoke principle staircase and external seating incorporating carved stonework detailing. We found Powell Masonry to be diligent and provided good quality accurate workmanship. They Were always pleasant and amicable.

I have worked with Powell Masonry for some 20 years. I have always been, at a time when Craig was a mere young man, most impressed with their mason’s expertise, accuracy and, frankly, magic.

Over the past 3 years Craig Powell, now MD of Powell Masonry, has yet again astounded me by his total understanding of natural stone and its use in the essential part of buildings. The scheme I have been involved in with Powell Masonry required intricate stone lintels, stone dressings and semi-structural stone, all allied with difficult construction and construction phasing procedures, which were resolved with almost consummate ease. As an architect, I cannot imagine working with any better Mason. He, also, in the same house produced floor tiling and wall claddings to a very high quality. Together, we produced a fine house, admired by all, in the center of an important Conservation Area.

I have no hesitation in unreservedly recommending Craig Powell for any master mason’s activity.
